As always, going to Chance gave a lift to Tyler’s day, just as riding and communing with horses used to do before life had become all school uniforms and business suits.

Tyler waited outside the fence, not wanting to scare the horse. After a while, he was able to make his slow way over the barrier, squatting on the grass opposite Chance, who was grazing about twenty feet off.

One minute, Tyler moved a foot closer. Then another minute, another foot.

And another.

Another.

It seemed like eons later, but Tyler ultimately got to the point where he was close enough so that Chance raised his head, acknowledging him.

Tyler didn’t move except to offer his hand, just as he’d been doing ever since they’d met.

This time, though, the animal approached, nuzzling Tyler’s fingers, his arm, nosing him so enthusiastically that Tyler just about lost his balance.

He laughed. It was so simple to do around Chance, but not so much with anyone else. Except…

Tyler put the image of him and Zoe at the swimming hole out of his mind.

“There, boy,” he said softly. “You finally used to what’s around you now?”

He kept talking as he began to stand, keeping eye contact. Chance didn’t even shy away.

“You’re sure looking better, even after a couple of days, aren’t you?”

It was true—Chance’s weight seemed to be going up instead of down, even in barely noticeable terms. And the horse seemed livelier, his eyes shining instead of looking at the world with a dull sheen. The vet would be visiting again for a checkup, and Tyler knew the report would be a positive one.

Chance had cocked one of his legs, taking the weight off it, relaxing, so Tyler laid his hand on his neck.

They stood like that for a while, until Tyler slid his palm back, gently patting his horse, bonding with him.

Eventually, Chance wandered away, toward the pasture shelter. The afternoon was easing into dusk, and it would be time for Tyler to go soon, so he saw to Chance’s feed, checking over the shelter, too, until he walked to his cabin for a shower and dinner. He wouldn’t rush Chance, but he couldn’t wait to take him for a ride.

As he made his way down the graveled path, he thought of sitting on a stoop again tonight with Zoe, maybe even mentioning his progress with Chance to her since she’d met the horse and might be interested.

He slowed his steps. Zoe. She’d been the first to come to his mind.

But why should that rattle him when she seemed to be the only person he could really talk to right now? Jeremiah had been a decent confidant before, but Tyler had never chatted about things like Kristen or true heartbreak with him.

What was it about Zoe that made the talking simpler?

Tyler was still trying to figure it out when he passed Miguel’s cabin on the way to his own.

Zoe’s father was tossing some horseshoes at a stake, all by himself. When he threw the last one, the older man slowly made his way over to retrieve them.
